A selection of the President's remarks at the University of Tehran on the occasion of the start of the academic year.

The President stated that science is an ongoing tradition, and we cannot set it aside, adding: Scientific transformation occurs in the shadow of the acceptability of criticism in science. Even in religious sciences and interpretations of the Quran, you see that a scholar proves a topic that another scholar has criticized before.

He said: Islamizing human sciences does not mean that we should completely disregard human knowledge in this area. Science should be critiqued; it should not merely be preserved, because science is not something that can be discarded, but is something that can be critiqued and may even be disproven. However, it cannot simply be removed. So, how is it that some people have thought to eliminate part of the sciences? Removal makes no sense, but we can present better arguments, more precise statements, and more scientific material while subjecting those previous points to critique and refutation.

In another part of his remarks, the President stated that significant steps have been taken by our universities, officials, and esteemed students in the fields of science, production, and technology. He said: In my opinion, a chain cannot be formed with isolated links. We cannot achieve wealth and power through scientific articles alone; this link must be connected with another link, and this process must continue. Industry and agriculture must be linked to universities; otherwise, we will have graduates for whom no jobs are available.
Rohani emphasized that we can only make scientific progress if we are connected to the world, and this interaction with the world is not limited to foreign policy. We must also interact with the world in economics, science, and technology. In this regard, we are considering building an IT city in collaboration with a major country. We believe that today's world is one of competition, and if we fall behind, the independence and national power of that backward country will be at risk.
