Graduate Studies

The Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) offers graduate programs leading to the degree of Master of Science. Graduate students have the opportunity to conduct research in one of below seven departmental research areas:
  • Control Engineering
  • Power System Engineering
  • Power Electronics and Electrical Machines
  • Communication System Engineering
  • Communication Engineering (Fields &waves)
  • Integrated Circuits Electronics
  • Computer Software Engineering

The two-year Master of Science program consists of a number of core courses, electives courses, and a master’s thesis. Candidates may satisfy the requirements for the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) by completing the following:
  • Graduate courses (a minimum of eight graduate courses plus a seminar course: 26 credits)
  • Master’s thesis (6 credits), for a program total of at 32 credits
The thesis work, to be carried out in the 2nd year, will be supervised by the faculty member from one of the groups listed above.

This program is research oriented and the thesis is expected to involve a thorough examination of a topic of current interest in a research area within the department. Undertaking this program provides students with an opportunity to conduct intensive research under the supervision of researchers who are leaders in their field. The program is an ideal preparation for a PhD degree or an industrial research career.
The formal residence requirement for the M.Sc. degree is four terms of full-time study. During the three-term residency requirement period, students must register for a minimum of 8 credits to be considered full-time. Full-time students must complete the degree within two (2) years of initial registration. However, upon approval of the supervisor, it is possible to continue the program up to one more year (i.e. complete the degree within three (3) years of initial registration).
